Lesson 2

I began this shoot by photographing the stretches at the start of the lesson. This image has been corrected in photoshop. I've used colour correction and fill light in camera raw to get an exposure I'm now happy with.

The first image taken of Master Stevens.

I wanted to document the space they practice in as well as the martial artists themselves.

jumping side kick, unfortunately I missed the top of his head on this image.

I like the energy in this image and the concentration on his face.

Jumping side kick from the rear view.

I like this jump kick, he has one of the best techniques in the academy, however he blinked on the moment of impact. I still feel that this is a useable image.

round house kick at two heights before putting the leg down. The chair and table top in the background detract from the image.
1/100 f.4

I like that in this image you can still make out enough of the slogan to know what it says. I'm happy with the general composition, but again I've been let down by lighting.

There is a lot happening in this image. The two partners in the foreground preparing, the two further back performing the kick. I wanted to get a shot showing the class atmosphere.

similar to my previous image, but this time with two lower grade students, although this is an advanced class there is still a great divergence of skill.

I like this shot of the knife defence with the punch bags in the background. It shows the practicality of learning Martial Arts.

again theres just too much clutter in the background of this image for it to be useable in the book.

This is one of the more clear images.

This image could have been improved if I stood at a more central point to shoot, however there were a pair training in the way and I was attempting not to distract them in order to get more natural looking images.

same image with crop.

Attempting some different techniques with depth of field to document the academy. Showing the embroidery on this.

brown belt and purple belt going through knife defences.

the image here has been vastly improved with this portrait crop.

Kick blocks and holds

I took this to show the strange juxtaposition of family and ancient eastern martial arts.
